TYNESIDE WAS IN DEPRESSION IN THE 30’S

Most people will remember or will have read about the famous “Jarrow Crusade” when hundreds of people marched to Westminster in London!

Industrial depression was severe on Tyneside. Two-thirds of the male population in Jarrow were out of work and it was little better in Felling! Half of Felling Male Voice Choir were unemployed.

Employed members helped out colleagues with choir expenses, clothing and even food. Special initiatives were run to try and raise funds to help!

The Depression also seemed to have an impact on the success of the Choir in competitions. The premier success of the late 1920’s and early 1930’s was not followed up.

The true spirit of the Choir shone through in September 1939 when the Second World War broke out. The conductor and members resolved that whatever happened, the choir must go on.
