Gateshead Town Hall

BBC wished to honour Tom Mearis by broadcasting a Felling Male Voice Choir concert with their chorus director live from Gateshead Town Hall on 31st January 1957.

Start of broadcast delayed by 15 minutes to cover event in London and then concert faded out during one of Tom Mearis’s favourite songs, “Crossing the Bar”. Public were outraged!

BBC offered another concert in March but were insisting on their conductor and not Felling’s. They would not back down and arranged to broadcast another choir.

The Evening Chronicle were very supportive of Felling Male Voice Choir.

The Choir subsequently held their own memorial to their famous conductor.
